Internal tides near the Celtic Sea shelf break: a new look at a well known problem

چکیده
Internal waves generated by tides in the Celtic Sea were investigated on the basis of in-situ data collected at the continental slope in July 2012, and theoretically using a weakly nonlinear theory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model. It was found that internal solitary waves generated over the shelf break and propagated seaward did not survive in the course of their evolution. Due to the large bottom steepness they disintegrated locally over the continental slope radiating several wave systems seaward and transforming their energy to higher baroclinic modes. In the open part of the sea, i.e. 120 km away from the shelf break, internal waves were generated by a baroclinic tidal beam which was radiated from the shelf break downward to the abyss. After reflection from the bottom it returned back to the surface where it hit the seasonal pycnocline and generated packets of high-mode internal solitary waves. Another effect that had strong implications for the wave dynamics was internal wave reflection from sharp changes of vertical fluid stratification in the main pycnocline. A large proportion of the tidal beam energy that propagated downward did not reach the bottom but reflected upward from the layered pycnocline and Preprint submitted to Deep Sea Research I May 18, 2015 returned back to the surface seasonal pycnocline where it generated some extra higher mode internal wave systems, including internal wave breathers.

Tidal energy conversion in a global hot spot: On the 3-D dynamics of baroclinic tides at the Celtic Sea shelf break
Globally, the Celtic Sea shelf break is ranked highest as an energetic ‘‘hot spot’’ of tidal energy conversion, therefore making it the most significant contributor to global internal tidal energy flux. In this paper, the three-dimensional dynamics of baroclinic tides in the shelf-slope area of the Celtic Sea was investigated numerically and using observational data collected on the 376th cruis...
متن کاملInternal tides and baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea 2. Effects of the critical latitude and stratification
Tidal dynamics affect Antarctic Bottom Water and Ice Shelf Water production in the southern Weddell Sea and the general circulation and mixing. In this region, tidal dynamics were found to be extremely sensitive both to the proximity of the continental shelf-slope break to the critical latitude ? crit and to the existence of a shelf break front. If the continental slope was not in the vicinity ...
متن کاملInternal Tides and Baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea. Part I: Model Description and Comparison of Model Results to Observations
In the southern Weddell Sea, several water masses with the capability to form Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) meet near the continental shelf break. The internal tidal field over the continental shelf break here is of interest due to its potential to mix these waters and form AABW. A modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was utilized to investigate the internal tidal fields generate...
متن کاملMultisensor Observations of Internal Waves and Their Effects in the Bay of Biscay
Observations of internal solitary waves (ISWs or IWs) with ERS SAR and other satellite sensors in the central Bay of Biscay are presented and discussed. The existence of the IWs, and longer wavelength internal tides, as locally large features here, about 140-150 km from the nearest shelf break topography, was predicted and studied with in situ ADCP measurements by New and Pingree (1990a, 1992)....
متن کاملInternal tides and baroclinicity in the southern Weddell Sea 1. Model description
Near the continental shelf break in the southern Weddell Sea, Warm Deep Water and Western Shelf Water meet. Mixing mechanisms, such as internal tides, have the potential to mix these water masses and form Antarctic Bottom Water. A modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model was utilized to investigate the internal tidal fields generated by the interaction of the M2 barotropic tide with topogr...
